Prior to the 2024 Indian Premier League, Gill assumed captaincy from Hardik Pandya, who is now leading the Mumbai Indians. Gill has demonstrated strong leadership in his first three games in the position. Gill guided GT to their second victory of the season on Sunday, a seven-wicket victory against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). Gill hit 36 off of 28 balls in the match against SRH, giving GT a strong lead as they pursued 163.
Following his removal, GT quickly lose wickets, giving SRH the upper hand in the match. Nevertheless, GT crossed the finish line thanks to a stunning 45 runs from 36 balls by Sai Sudharsan. At the post-match presentation, Sudharsan said that facing fast bowlers on this surface was 'tough'. The 22-year-old expressed gratitude to Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma for holding Hyderabad to 162 runs.
"One aspect I want to touch on is Shubman Gill. He was calm. I thought he captained the side very well. He's new to the job, but, you know, he's adjusting extremely well, because he didn't waste time with his placings. He had a plan in his mind from the outset and which was good to see," Shastri said on Star Sports.
"I'm happy that my contribution helped the team win, so definitely happy. It was a difficult wicket to play the fast bowlers, bowling into the pitch was hard to score off, so we decided to target that one over of spin. Great contributions from Mohit bhai and Rashid bhai, picked crucial wickets and restricted the target by around 10-15 runs. Playing in front of the home crowd is a plus point for us. Everyone wants to get more runs, I just want to contribute my best, milestones will happen by itself," Sudharsan said.
