The T20 World Cup 2024 is quickly approaching, with Indian selectors set to declare the squad in the coming days. Since the deadline for submitting the provisional squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC) is May 1, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will most likely meet in Delhi to finalize the final 15 players who will fly to the USA and West Indies to compete in the crucial event, which begins on June 2 in Dallas and Guyana.

According to Dainik Jagran, the selectors will meet in New Delhi on April 27 or 28. The Mumbai Indians will play against Delhi Capitals next week on April 27, therefore India captain Rohit Sharma will also be in the national capital. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, who is now on vacation abroad, will fly directly to Delhi to attend the meeting with his colleagues.

Some almost finalized names

The report further stated that experienced players would be preferred. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep are likely the sure shot selections and if they remain fit, they will board the flight to the US.

IPL performance will decide the way for Gill, Jaiswal & Pandya

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in the running, but according to the report, his selection is entirely dependent on his performance in the IPL. In the current season, he has only four wickets and 141 runs in seven matches.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will face off to decide who will bat as a backup opener. While the Gujarat Titans captain (Shubman Gill) is now among the season's top ten scorers with 263 runs in seven matches, Jaiswal is yet to reach his peak. The Rajasthan Royals opener has scored just 121 runs in as many games, averaging 17.29. Most likely, only one of the two batters will get the call. However, if the selectors decide to have both of them, Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh will miss out.

Too many options for Wicket-keeper

The wicketkeeper position is heavily fought since it is restricted and there are too many hopefuls. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are the front-runners, with Ishan Ishan and KL Rahul both making strong IPL performances.

Rahul is presently the season's fourth-best run-getter, with 286 runs in 7 matches, while Samson is only 10 runs behind. The RR captain has 276 runs to his name and three fifties. Meanwhile, Pant is the Delhi Capitals' leading scorer, with 210 runs in seven games.

Axar, Chahal, Bishnoi – fight for an extra spinner

With Jadeja and Kuldeep as the first-choice, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi appear to be competing for the third spinner's slot. While Patel brings his all-round ability to the table, Chahal is India's second-leading wicket-taker in the game's shortest format. In terms of their performance in the IPL 2024, the leg-spinner is a candidate for the Purple Cap this season, with 12 wickets, while Patel and Bishnoi are ranked below 20 on the list.
