Stadium's History -
Early History (1883-1947)
The stadium was founded in 1883 as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, named after the nearby 14th-century fortress of the same name. It was primarily utilized for local matches and tournaments.
Post-Independence Era (1947-Present)
The stadium staged its first Test match in 1948, between India and the West Indies. Since then, it has served as a regular venue for international cricket, hosting multiple Test matches, One-Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals.
The stadium has also served as the home ground for the Delhi Cricket Team in the Ranji Trophy and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Name Change and Recent Events (2019-Present)
In 2019, the stadium was renamed the Arun Jaitley Stadium in memory of the late Indian politician and cricket administrator, Arun Jaitley.
The stadium has seen its fair share of controversy, notably a 2009 event in which an ODI match between India and Sri Lanka was called off due to an unsafe pitch. In 2017, a pollution incident necessitated the postponing of a match.
Despite these issues, the Arun Jaitley Stadium remains an iconic cricket stadium in India, rich in history and renowned for its enthusiastic fans.
