Niclas Fuellkrug provided the opening goal with a 1–0 win for Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday with the striker outshining the superstar Kylian Mbappe on the evening.
The team who last got to the final since 2013 was the 1997 winners. They fought like lions and were the masterminds of that game as they defeated the heavily favoured home team, both of whom had more than 80,000 fans cheering them on.
"I believe that our performance as a team today was outstanding. To win the game, each person assisted the other. Long-serving center defender Mats Hummels stated, "We can be very satisfied with our performance, but we needed a bit of luck a couple of times."
Dortmund may still hope to make it back to Wembley, 11 years after their last Champions League final they having previously lost and drawn against PSG in the group stage this season.
Center-back With the ball deep in his own territory, Schlotterbeck considered a safe pass back to the goalkeeper, but he punted it forward instead, a move that only Fuellkrug saw coming.
Despite their offensive prowess in the first half, PSG had little opportunities and registered zero attempts on goal. This was after PSG had just wrapped up the Ligue 1 title the previous weekend.
After the break, though, the visitors came alive, with Mbappe striking the inside of one post only seconds before Achraf Hakimi, a former Dortmund wing-back, struck the inside of the other.
After 56 minutes, PSG had a chance to tie the score when Marquinhos curled a magnificent pass through a packed Dortmund box, but Fabian Ruiz's diving header missed.
Germany, not England or France, will receive an additional Champions League spot for the next season thanks to the victory and Tuesday's 2-2 draw between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the other semi-final.
