"My IPL ended prematurely with Punjab. I was disrespected at Kings XI. I felt I wasn’t treated properly as a senior who had done so much for the league and brought value. They treated me like a kid. For the first time in my life, I felt like… pic.twitter.com/OpiXjrEpWY
Gayle, in his revelations, stated that he was disrespected & mistreated at the franchise. Gayle further claimed that he was disappointed and even broke down in a one-on-one meeting with Anil Kumble. The Windies also stated that the then PBKS captain, KL Rahul, urged Gayle to stay with the team, but Gayle had already made up his mind owing to the Men's T20 World Cup in 2021.
'' My IPL career came to an abrupt end, you know, with the Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings). I believe the treatment given to me wasn't good. I was being disrespected by the franchise for a guy like me, who has given everything to the league & for the franchise. I was being treated like a kid, & then I pretty much felt like the writing was on the wall for me. I also went into depression, that's why if someone talks of depression, I can now relate to it". said Gayle in an interaction on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube Channel.
''So I know talking about it's our job we've to work, but at that time, no work, no money, nothing was important at that stage for me. At that point, my only requirement was to get some mental peace. I had a one-on-one discussion with head coach Anil Kumble, where I informed him that I was leaving, as the T20 World Cup was to be played, and there was a bubble in place. Hence, after that last game against the Mumbai Indians, I thought ok, that's it for me. If I stay, I'll destroy myself more," Quipped Gayle.
" I was mistreated. After the chat with Anil, I was disappointed. I then had a chat with Captain KL Rahul. I said to him Listen, man, thank you. KL then said to me, "Chris, you know you want to stay. You'll be playing the next game". To this, I said to him Listen, man, I wish you all the very best for the future & I packed my bag & walked out" Gayle stated.
For those unversed, Gayle talked about the IPL 2021 when he decided to leave the camp mid-way during the second phase of the league, which took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following the league's suspension due to COVID-19.
Since the league's resumption, Gayle played two of the three games. In the 2021 season, he featured in 10 matches and scored 193 runs at an average of 21.44.
