As the wait for the T20 World Cup 2024 team to be selected draws to a close, the Indian batsman Shubman Gill discussed his chances of being chosen or not for the prestigious tournament. Despite being one of the team's most promising young batsmen, Gill hasn't exactly shown the T20 cricket world his fire lately. The opening batsman for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has not performed up to par either, with an average of 38 and a strike rate of 146.15 in just 9 games.
Gill acknowledged that it would be disappointing to be left out of India's T20 World Cup squad, but he is still hopeful about being included.
I played the 50 overs World Cup last year and it was a dream for me to represent my country in a World Cup. If I can make it to this year's T20 World Cup, it will be nothing short of a dream coming true. Last year's World Cup experience would help me as we try to win the World Cup.
~he said in an interview with Hindustan Times
As a player, I would undoubtedly be unhappy after scoring around 900 runs (in the IPL) last season, when questioned about the possibility of not being selected. I would still be wishing the athletes luck and supporting them.
~Gill responded
Gill has tough competition for the opening slot in the Indian T20I squad. Although Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal are also trying out for the same position. Rohit Sharma will lead the team in the World Cup.
As of right now in the IPL 2024, Kohli leads the batting section, although Jaiswal has been an excellent opener for India in all formats, including T20Is. In addition to offering superior balance at the top, left-hander Jaiswal has a higher strike rate in the shortest format than Gill.
