India's top spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has left for home midway through the third Test match in Rajkot against England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India informed via an official press release late on Friday night that Ashwin would not be taking any further part in the Test match due to a medical emergency in his family.
Ashwin had just taken his 500th Test wicket on Day 2 of the match against England and was expected to play a big role in the match due to the nature of the wicket at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.

Due to Ashwin's absence, India will be unable to field their full playing XI. The Indian side can deploy a substitute in place of Ashwin, but that player will be unable to bat or bowl.
According to the ICC rules, the player may continue to discuss with the umpire.
24.1 Substitute fielders
24.1.1 The umpires shall allow a substitute fielder
24.1.1.1 if they are satisfied that a fielder has been injured or become ill and that this occurred during the match, or
24.1.1.2 for any other wholly acceptable reason.
In all other circumstances, a substitute is not allowed.
24.1.2 A substitute shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicketkeeper only with the consent of the umpires. Note, however, Law 42.7.1 (Additional points relating to Level 3 and Level 4 offenses).
24.1.3 A nominated player may bowl or field even though a substitute has previously acted for him/her, subject to 24.2, 24.3, and Law 42.4 (Level 3 offenses and action by umpires).
The ICC rules currently allow an on-field player to be replaced with a comparable player from the existing squad. However, it is important to note that Ashwin was not injured during the present Test match, hence no like substitution would be allowed during the game.

Ashwin's absence would have a significant impact on the current Test match, as the spinner practically functions as an all-rounder due to his multi-dimensional skill with the bat. In reality, Ashwin hit 37 runs off 89 balls in India's first innings, leading the team to a strong 445-run total.
Apart from batting, India will undoubtedly miss Ashwin's bowling abilities in the last innings in Rajkot. In the last Test in Vizag, Ashwin picked up three wickets in the fourth innings to help India make a comeback in the Test series.
