In a shocking twist, former top Indian cricketer and the Test captain Rohit Sharma took to social media to reveal that he has decided to retire from the Test cricket yesterday evening at 07:30 pm. While the news received a warm reception in the cricketing world it has also garnered reports today stating that a strong signal from the national selectors to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) being another reason for Sharma’s step.
“Hello, everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit posted on social media. “Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
The Indian Express reported that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decision-makers were not interested in making the same mistakes they had during the England visit. Stability within the team was therefore deemed of utmost significance. Rohit has only averaged 6.20 in five innings during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Because of his outstanding accomplishments, he chose to skip the last Test match in Sydney.
Because of his recent success in red-ball cricket, the selectors were reluctant to choose him captain. He could have been removed from the playing XI because he is a specialist batsman, but it would have been more difficult if he had been captain. According to individuals with knowledge, it may have negatively impacted the team, as was the case during the Australia tour.
"The selection committee's reasoning is evident. They need a new captain for the England tour, and Rohit isn't a good match, especially given his performance in the red ball. The publication cited an Indian board source as stating, "The selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit will not lead the team, and they want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle."
