T20 World Cup records have a new name in its profile – Fazalhaq Farooqi. He also became the first player of the 2024 tournament to take five wickets in the match by tearing apart Uganda’s batting lineup in their initial match.
The outstanding bowling by Farooqi led Afghanistan to a comfortable 125-run win over the Guyana side. On debut he annihilated the Ugandan team scoring 5/9, proving his ability to sling the ball with precision. It is not only the first instance of five wickets haul in the ongoing tournament but there has been only three occasions in the entire T20 World Cup history where a bowler made such achievement while leaking less than ten runs.
Farooqi’s fiery spell was not a one-time affair. He came back in the 13th over to claim another two wickets which really eliminated any chances the Ugandans had of competing for the target. These wickets are special for Farooqi since he has never taken any wickets in T20 Internationals before this match.
Even though this is Farooqi’s career-high, it also demonstrates the continuous improvement of the Afghan cricket team. The team has a rich record of churning out world-class bowlers and Farooqi’s inclusion only strengthens their status as a formidable side, especially in the fast bowling domain.
