The Border Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin from 22nd November at the Optus stadium in Perth. As is the norm the mind games have already begun from the Aussie camp with predictions & tough statements on Indian players making the rounds in the cricketing world.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir answered a flurry of questions in the pre tour press conference at Mumbai before jetting to Australia. one such question was asked about the comments made by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting on poor form of Indian veteran batters Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma.
The Indian coach answered saying that he completely backs the veteran in what has been a tough last few months for the experienced duo after some tough comments from Ricky Ponting who, stated that any other player wouldn't have survived in the Indian test team after hitting just 2 test tons in fiver years.
Gautam Gambhir, gave a mouth shutting reply to Ponting stating that Rohit & Virat have achieved a lot of success for India in the past & have been the match-winners for the team in the past decade. The Indian head coach continued with his onslaught on Ponting stating that Ponting has got nothing to do with Indian cricket and mentioned Kohli and Rohit's passion and hunger to do well for the team.
"I feel Ricky Ponting should focus on Australia Cricket, instead of showing concern on Rohit & Virat's form, they have achieved a lot for the team & the good things is that they are still hungry & still raring to go and achieve more for the country, I like players like Rohit & Virat who even after achieving a lot of success for India have still some fire left in that belly to achieve some good results for their country, the hunger in that dressing room more important for me, even more so when we've just lost a home test series" Gambhir said in the press conference.
In the ongoing year, Kohli and Rohit have had poor outing with the bat and the recent 0-3 series loss against New Zealand has attracted more attention on their form. Rohit has scored just 588 runs from 11 matches in the ongoing year at an average of 29.40 with two centuries and as many fifties to his name. On the other hand, Kohli has scored 250 runs from six matches (12 innings) at an average of 22.72 with just one half century.
The poor form of Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma has been a big reason for India's losses against New Zealand, Team India has to now win the BGT in Australia by a margin of 4-0 or 5-0 to qualify for the World test Championship Final at Lord's next year without depending on other results. For that to happen it's imperative that the two batting maestros of Indian Cricket return back to form.
