The Toffees recorded their first win in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park since 2010 last night when they defeated Liverpool 2-0, an outcome that wrecked the Reds' title hopes for the new season.

Victory for the Reds leaves Jürgen Klopp's men four points below the leaders Arsenal and just one point ahead of reigning champions Manchester City, who have a two-game advantage.

"We need to be in crisis at City and Arsenal and we need to win football game. I know that I have four games to go of this reign," said Klopp talking about Liverpool getting the title at the end of his reign.

Although the outcome hampered Liverpool's prospects of winning the league, it helped Everton's chances of surviving, as Sean Dyche's club moved eight points clear of the relegation zone with the victory.

The home crowd appeared less concerned about the fact since they were too preoccupied with applauding the harm done to Liverpool's season.

As the final whistle blew, the players celebrated on the field but most of the 39,000 spectators stayed inside the stadium to take in the excitement. "You lost the league at Goodison Park," they chanted.

"I'm really let down. We allowed the game to unfold precisely how Everton want," Klopp remarked.

Since taking over at Anfield in 2015, Klopp has dominated this matchup, winning nine of the previous sixteen derbies before to Wednesday's match.

Following the rest of several important players for Sunday's 3-1 victory against Fulham, Klopp made six changes, but he did not receive the expected response.

Encouraged by their victory against Nottingham Forest over the weekend to escape the relegation zone, Everton has changed from the team that lost 13 Premier League games in a row from December to April.

"We are aware that they are a good side. We have to be fully committed and fully invested."

At the start, Everton believed they were due a penalty after Calvert-Lewin was brought down by Alisson Becker, but VAR stepped in to deny them as the striker was actually offside.

Alisson then managed to tip away a header from Calvert-Lewin, and Ben Godfrey missed the target as Liverpool struggled to handle Everton's threat from set-pieces.

Another defensive mishap from the Reds resulted in the opening goal after 27 minutes.

Alexis Mac Allister's miskick fell perfectly for Branthwaite, and despite Alisson's efforts, the defender's shot found the back of the net off the post.

Falling behind jolted Liverpool into action, and only a mix of poor finishing and the efforts of Jordan Pickford kept Everton in the lead until half-time.

Mateta ended Newcastle's four-game winning streak and jeopardized their chances of making it to Europe by breaking the deadlock in the 55th and adding the second late in the game.
