CSK’s purpose-driven batting style is setting up standards for a long IPL season targeting maximum run-scoring intent

Even though the IPL 2024 is still early, the batting prowess of the Chennai Super Kings has a renewed sense of purpose. Blessed with hitting depth that reaches No. 9 and may go even farther, CSK is trying to shatter the glass barrier in which strike-rate has completely eclipsed all other batting stats.

First-hand taste against RCB:

In an attempt to reach Royal Challengers Bengaluru's goal of 174 on Friday, Chennai's batting lineup deviated from their customary strategy, which calls for one of the top three batsmen to go the entire distance. Rather, their lineup was designed specifically to provide constant pressure to the RCB's bowlers. With the exception of their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was dismissed early, their other five batters proceeded at a strike rate of 246.66, 142.10, 122.22, 121.42, and 147.05. Despite the fact that none of them scored more than 37, Chennai won in 18.4 overs.

Fleming’s Remark:

“I’m not sure,” head coach Stephen Fleming said if he wants a big score from one of their batsmen. “What I do know, I really like the intent of the batters. We have a longer batting line-up with the extra player (Impact Player), and I thought the intent that our batters showed was great. You don’t always get it with one score, one big score, so to have everybody contribute is a positive as well,”
