Mitchell Starc, the most expensive acquisition in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, will undoubtedly be in the spotlight when the new season kicks off on March 22. The Australian player, who cost Rs 24.75 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders at the auction, is anticipated to deliver some spectacular performances as the team attempts to win the T20 league for the third time in its existence.
However, KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir does not believe that Starc will be under more pressure due to his high price tag.
The Knight Riders' goal is still to break their trophy drought. Gambhir just wants to see Starc continue to achieve what he has done for Australia.
I don't think the price tag will be an added pressure for him. I only hope he can do for KKR what he does for Australia in international cricket.
~said Gambhir after reaching Kolkata for the T20 league
I have always mentioned that KKR to me is not a franchise, but an emotion. I am thus happy to be back
I know there will be expectations and I hope to live up to it and make the fans happy
~said Gambhir
Gambhir captained the Knight Riders to their most recent IPL victory. They have not experienced any success in the T20 competition since the southpaw left the team in 2017. Despite nearly taking home the trophy when the Knight Riders advanced to the tournament final in 2021, their play without Gambhir has been quite ordinary.
When Gambhir returns, the franchise's management hopes to bring back the old charm.
