The IPL 2024 came to a close last night with Kolkata Knight Riders' thumping win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in, Chennai by 8 wickets and 57 balls to spare. Making it the shortest IPL Final everlasting just 29 overs.
Coming to the game Sunrisers Hyderabad Won the toss and chose to bat first, the flip of the coin didn't favor them much as they were reduced to 6-2 in 2 overs, eventually getting bundled out for 113 in 18.3 overs with all six bowlers for KKR scalping wickets. KKR too began their chase by losing Sunil Narine in the 2nd over, however, Venkatesh Iyer had other ideas as he stroked a quick-fire half-century with good support from RahmanUllah Gurbaz helped KKR to lift their 3rd title.
With the season now concluded it is time to make a team for the tournament
Without any further delay let's start:-
Promoting Sunil Narine as the opener paid instant dividends for KKR as the West Indian batter racked up 500 runs this season for the time after having a combined score of 418 runs in the last five editions. Narine also chipped in with the ball too snaring 17 scalps this season. Ensuring he was the Most valuable player for the KKR franchise
The Australian has been in the spotlight for a long long time now, the highest scorer in the World Cup ensured that he also proved his mettle in the biggest league in the world. Racking up 567 runs with an average of 40.50 and a Strike Rate of 191.55.
The Indian batting maestro had a prolific season winning the orange cap again after 2016. Virat Kohli scored 741 runs at an average of 61.75 and a Strike Rate of 154.70. Kohli was criticized for his Strike Rate in the first half of the season. However time and again he has proved his critics wrong and this too was no different In the second half of the tournament we saw a different Virat Kohli looking to attack from the onset, Taking on the left-arm spinners who are his nemesis there is no reason as to why he won't fit in the 11.
Whenever this name comes to mind people talk about the talent he has and the natural ability to hit towering sixes and silky fours on the carpet. But time again he would disappoint his fans by not playing to his potential and getting out on rash shots. This time though he proved everyone wrong and scored runs heavily in both halves of the season. Sanju scored 531 runs at an average of 48.27 and a Strike Rate of 153. With the T20 World Cup to be played right after the IPL Sanju did enough to make a spot himself in the 15-member squad.
Just like his RR skipper Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag also falls in the same category of abundance of talent and class but was just not able to live up to the expectations. The most backed player by RR franchisee Parag finally paid them back by racking up 573 runs in the season with an average of 52 and a Strike Rate close to 150. Parag played a crucial role as a senior batter in the middle order helping RR to reach till Qualifier 2 of the tournament.
Dre Russ as they call him had another prolific season for the Knights helping them win the title, as the impact rule has come into place the role of the all-rounders has been a limited one. Russell whenever called upon finished games for KKR, in the finals Russell took 3 wickets to break the back of the SRH batting lineup.
The young boy from Andhra had a memorable season as he performed in both departments from scoring crucial runs down the order to picking up a couple of quick wickets at any stage of the game. Reddy's heroics led SRH to the finals of the tournament. Reddy scored 303 runs at a Strike Rate of 143 and scalped 3 wickets in the season to win the emerging player of the award for the tournament.
'Purple Patel' as fans call him had an outstanding season for Punjab Kings, the team from North though had another underwhelming season finishing 9th in the points table. Harshal had a slow start to the tournament the wickets were not easy to come by as he leaked a lot of runs due to pitches being flat and batting-friendly. Patel started to come into his own when the pitches started to slow down and he also got his rhythm back, Patel snared 24 wickets at an economy rate this season his second-best season after scalping 32 wickets in 2021.
The KKR spinner had a dream season where he scalped 21 wickets his best season in the IPL. Chakarawarthy just like Harshal Patel had a slow and indifferent season to start with having 8 wickets in 8 matches. However, once the pitches started aiding turn he was just unstoppable to counter.
When it comes to bowling, especially in Indian and IPL Cricket Jasprit Bumrah's name will always be there in the top of the list. Bumrah snared 20 wickets in the season with the third-best economy, in otherwise a horror of a campaign for MI finishing last in the league stages. Without Bumrah the Mumbai bowling attacked toothless.
Natarajan had a good IPL season after a long time, his previous best season was his debut season, and in between he was laid low by many injuries. But with better fitness increase in pace came back into the tournament picking up 19 wickets in the season, playing a crucial role in Hyderabad reaching the finals.
