In a dramatic event, Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the IPL 2024. Notably, the pacer has suffered an injury to his left ankle and will need surgery to return to action.
According to PTI, the experienced seamer would require extensive rehabilitation time, which will prevent him from participating in the tournament's upcoming season. According to the report, he may also be ruled out of the T20 World Cup.
India pacer Mohammed Shami ruled out of IPL due to left ankle injury which would require surgery in the UK: BCCI source tells PTI
— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) February 22, 2024
Shami was instrumental in leading India to the final of the recent World Cup, which they lost to Australia in Ahmedabad. However, following his outstanding performance in the event, the experienced seamer was sidelined for a significant period due to the previously reported injury.
Shami's absence is a major loss for his IPL side, the Gujarat Titans, as he has been an excellent performance for them. Shami has 48 wickets in 33 matches with the Titans, with an average of 21.04 and a strike rate of 15.75, his best for any IPL side.
The Gujarat Titans will be captained by Shubman Gill, a young Indian hitter, after Hardik Pandya was traded to the Mumbai Indians. If speculations are to be accepted, they will face MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener on March 22.
Shami played his last game in the ODI World Cup 2023 and since then he has been out of the game. It was a beautiful time for him to join in the IPL 2024 league that would prepare him for T20 World Cup but due to his ankle injury he will be not able to play in either of the series.
Shami was in London in the last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he could start light running and take it from thereon.
But the injection hasn't worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for the UK for surgery. IPL seems out of the question.

This incident raises a question mark about the injury rehabilitation management program planned by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for Shami.
It is now unlikely that the pace bowler will be able to return before India's home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October and November.
