The Board of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) over the years has been coming up with new reforms like Strategic Timeouts, & the Impact player rule to enhance the game & make it more exciting for fans to watch every year with more enthusiasm. Much like every year this year too BCCI has made a few tweaks in the IPL rules. Let's have a look
The BCCI has revoked the ban on the use of Saliva after discussions with all the 10 captains in the captain's meeting where most of the captains supported this move. Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently appealed to the cricketing world to lift the ban on the use of Saliva on the ball.
The saliva ban was originally imposed as a health and safety measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, but with the restrictions now lifted, bowlers can resume the practice.
A significant new rule- the 'Second Ball Rule' is going to be implemented in IPL 2025. This rule will help to counter the effects of dew particularly in the night games. Dew's presence on the ground gave an undue advantage to the team batting second as Dew made it difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball.
To address the issue, the umpires will assess the condition of the ball after the 11th over of the second innings.
If there is excessive dew present on the outfield the fielding team can take the new ball in the 11th over. This rule only is applied for night games only.
The Impact Player that was introduced in IPL 2023 is retained for this cycle of the Indian Premier League. The rule had faced severe backlash from some of the biggest icons of Indian Cricket Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma appealing to the board to do away with the impact rule as it reduced the use of an All-Rounder in the game.
The impact rule gives teams an advantage to substitute a player during the game thus enabling their chances to win a game & allowing a player who is not in the main 11.
The Rule will be reviewed after the end of this cycle of the IPL that runs from 2025 to 2027.
