Rain or Shine? How a Washed-Out Canada Game Affects Pakistan's Super 8 Path

Neha . June 11, 2024

At the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan's cricket team faces Canada on Tuesday in a match that must be won. Pakistan now faces Canada, a squad that has won one of their previous two games, following their losses to the USA and the United States of America in their opening two games of the season. Pakistan, ranked 4 out of 5 teams in Group A, cannot afford to make even one mistake. But what if they play Canada in the rain?

Rain delayed the start of the India vs. Pakistan match, but the 20-over-per-side match went forward anyhow.

In New York, there is around a 25% chance of rain on June 12. The odds are still just around 11% in the morning. But things can shift quickly.

Pakistan vs Canada Weather Report:

10:00 AM: 02 %

11:00 AM: 02 %

12:00 PM: 02 %

1:00 PM: 04 %

2:00 PM: 07 %

3:00 PM: 07 %

Pakistan's Super 8 qualification scenario for the T20 World Cup 2024:

The side captained by Babar Azam has to thrash Canada and Ireland handily in order to raise their currently -0.150 net run rate. In contrast, the USA has a very strong NRR of +0.626, while India's NRR is +1.455.

If the USA loses its remaining games and India wins its next two against the USA and Canada, Pakistan will advance. With a victory over Ireland, the USA may advance to the Super 8s even if they lose to India. Pakistan is currently not in complete control of it.

What happens if the Pakistan vs. Canada T20 World Cup Group 1 match is canceled due to rain?

Pakistan and Canada will split the points for the match if the weather cancels out the entire game; each side will receive one point. That would make it hard for Babar's team to surpass the United States' four-point total. Pakistan would therefore be eliminated from the Super 8 race in the event of a washed-out battle.

It should be kept in mind that there won't be a reserve day for any group-stage games at the T20 World Cup 2024.
