5-time champions Chennai Super Kings have been jolted with a huge blow as their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2025 after sustaining a fracture on his elbow.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has now been handed over the duties to lead the side once again. With this development, Dhoni also achieved a unique record, becoming the first Indian uncapped player to lead an IPL franchise.

Fleming On Ruturaj Gaikwad

"As far as replacements, we did have some options to choose from, Dhoni is ready to take over, he knew where it was coming from,” Fleming said.

Gaikwad picked up an injury to his right forearm in the home fixture against the Rajasthan Royals when a Tushar Deshpande's delivery rose awkwardly from the Good length area & hit Gaikwad on his right forearm.

Gaikwad was a doubtful starter against the Delhi Capitals but managed to make it through to the game. Gaikwad last played for CSK in their last fixture against the Punjab Kings at Mullanpur, where CSK lost the game by 18 runs.

Gaikwad's absence as a batter from the top-order weakens their already misfiring batting unit. The yellow army will either have to include Deepak Hooda or Rahul Tripathi to fill in Gaikwad's place.

The Chennai Super Kings, title winners in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 & 2023, are currently languishing at the 9th spot with just a solitary win in their first 5 fixtures. The Chennai-based franchise plays their next match against the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday (11th April) at their backyard in Chepauk, Chennai.
