The Lucknow Super Giants defeated the Chennai Super Kings by chasing down the score of 211, brilliantly led by Marcus Stoinis, who turned in one of the best batting performances in IPL history. Any franchise would find it difficult to defeat CSK's stronghold at Chepauk, but Stoinis' valiant effort paid off generously as LSG defeated the Super Kings to secure a position in the playoffs. Following the game, Stoinis discussed how he used the lessons he had learned from MS Dhoni to an advantage against his team, CSK, at Chepauk on Tuesday.

In a social media video posted by LSG, Stoinis recalled the advice Dhoni once offered him regarding chasing large totals. The Australian all-rounder effectively applied Dhoni's advice at the Chepauk stadium.

MS Dhoni told this one thing to me. He said in big games, everyone thinks that I've got to do something extra. I've got to do something different. His mantra and how he speaks to himself is he stays there, he stands still and he says everyone else is going to change. I'm going to be the only one here that doesn't change and that holds him ahead of everyone else.

With his knock, Stoinis became the highest individual scorer in an effective run chase in IPL history. In a run chase of 189, Stoinis surpassed the mark of 120* set by former Punjab Kings hitter Paul Valthaty against Chennai in 2011. With 13 fours and 6 sixes in his knock of 63 balls, Stoinis hit an undefeated 124. He had an incredible strike rate of 196.83.

In these competitions, there are plenty of better opening batters better than me so I'll leave it to them. It's not just go go go, there were some bowlers we wanted to target and some bowlers we wanted to be more cautious against. There was a phase where I wasn't able to hit the boundaries so it was great Pooran could come in and take the pressure off.
Lots of ebbs and flows, just tried to keep it in control. You're planning and structuring, you're not liking certain bowlers and you're liking others more. I do think T20 cricket is changing, the scores that have been scored, the impact player role and how teams are taking on the bowlers.
