A highly contentious call was made against Virat Kohli on Sunday during the IPL 2024 match against KKR

In KKR's chase of the 223 put by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, there came a controversy when Virat Kohli was ruled out of his innings. Kohli, playing his shot aggressively, was caught flat-footed by a high full toss from Harshit Rana. But the delivery, visually, the eye saw it as coming over waist height. It went right under Kohli's bat and therefore the catch was too simple for Rana to make.

What was that 'catch'?

First of all, it is necessary to get an idea of what the batsman sees. If the ball is above the waist, then the batter can be called a no-ball at the popping crease. Contrary to it, in Virat's case, he was not a recluse.

At the final conclusion, a third umpire declared that it was a perfect delivery from Harshit Rana because there was no doubt that Kohli was out of his crease. The collision between the rolling ball and the hitting bat gave a fine effect of being ahead of the body.

At the measurement of 1.04 meters by the technology in standing position, the waist size of Virat Kohli was measured. However, from the technological analysis we could notice that if Kohli had stayed inside the crease, the ball would have reached him at the height of 0.92 meters. As a result, it falls outside the boundary and cannot be called a no-ball.

Argument:

Virat was unable to strike the ball with ease from his position. A beamer from a bowler is still hazardous even when he ventured slightly outside the crease. If Kohli hadn't placed his bat between his body and the ball, he would have been struck.

Following the match, RCB captain Faf du Plessis had stated, "Obviously, the rules are the rules." "At that point, Virat and I speculated that the ball may have been higher than his waist. They must gauge it by the popping crease, I suppose.

There will always be one team under certain circumstances that is content and one team that doesn't think the choice was the best one.

What Rule Book Say ?

'Bowling of dangerous and unfair non-pitching deliveries' (ICC regulation 41.7) states that any delivery that would have passed, without pitching, above the waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease is to be deemed unfair, regardless of whether the striker is likely to be physically injured. If the bowler makes a delivery of that kind, the umpire has to call and indicate no ball right away.
