In yet another case, a globally recognized sportsperson caught up in the IPL passion, Formula One driver Oscar Piastri has revealed that he is watching the current season of the Indian Premier League. The McLaren driver used social media to show his support for the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. In his post, the 23-year-old Formula One driver tagged his countryman and DC's head coach, Ricky Ponting.
Cricket was not always a universally acknowledged game. The game is now well-known throughout the world, and icons from various regions have begun to link themselves with it. The popularity of the IPL has also raised the game's profile to the point where Oscar Piastri has given it a shoutout. In his most recent Instagram post, Piastri was wearing the Delhi Capitals jersey. In the caption, the Aussie mentioned Ricky Ponting, the IPL franchise's coach.
This is not the first time, a sportsperson outside the realm of cricket has talked about the game. Famous sprinter, Yohan Blake used to support RCB during the days when Chris Gayle was a part of the team.
While the Delhi Capitals have the support of Oscar Piastri, they are still in a difficult situation and cannot afford to lose any more games. The Capitals have won four and lost five of their nine IPL 2024 matches to date. They are now ranked sixth on the table, and a few more victories might propel them into the top four. Thus, it will be interesting to see how DC performs the rest of the competition and whether they will be able to make the playoffs this time.
