Title Race, European Qualification, Relegation: What's Decided on the Last Day?

Neha . May 18, 2024

The 2023–24 Premier League season comes to a finish on Sunday, with the championship and European qualifying still up for grabs as well as the last relegation spot yet to be decided.

An examination of the many combinations of what is at risk on the last day:

Title race:

Manchester City leads West Ham by two points going into their last game, and they know that a win would mean they will win the championship for a record fourth straight year.

Pep Guardiola's team would need to win even if Arsenal defeated Everton since they have a goal differential that is one goal less than their opponent.

Arsenal, who placed second behind City in the previous season, is aiming to win the English championship for the first time in twenty years.

Locations in Europe

With Liverpool and Aston Villa locked into third and fourth place, respectively, which guarantees admission into the Champions League, the focus now shifts to qualifying for the Conference League and Europa League the following season.

Tottenham can secure fifth place and advance straight to the Europa League group stage by eliminating Sheffield United with only one more point.

Chelsea, who trail by three points but have a superior goal differential, might overtake them if they were to defeat Bournemouth.

With a point or better, Mauricio Pochettino's Blues would be guaranteed a spot in sixth place; but, a loss would give Newcastle, who are at Brentford, an advantage.

The sixth-place team would receive a Europa League group-stage slot if City prevails in that match next week, while the seventh-place team would receive Conference League football.

Demotion:

If results don't turn out as expected on the last day, Luton will join Sheffield United and Burnley in the second-tier Championship the following season.
Luton, three points behind Nottingham Forest, would need to overcome Fulham, Forest to lose to Burnley, who are relegated, and there to be a significant change in goal differential in order to survive.

For for the second time in Premier League history, all three promoted teams will revert to their previous positions if Luton's destiny is confirmed.
