Shami Likely to Miss 2 Tests Against England; Surya to Undergo Hernia Surgery

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami is likely to miss the first two Test matches against England starting January 25 as he has not resumed bowling following an ankle injury. In another development, world-leading T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav's return to cricket may take longer than expected, after it was revealed that he has a hernia and will need surgery. Surya is expected to be fully fit by his IPL but might his initial matches.

“Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England. Whereas in Yadav’s case, he will take more time than expected. After his hernia operation, it might take up to eight-nine weeks for him to start training. Hopefull,y he will be fit during the IPL,” a source in the Indian board informed.

Shami was included in the Test squad for the match against South Africa that was announced on November 30, but the 33-year-old's availability depended on his recovery following treatment. Later in the press release, BCCI said that they are not giving clean chit to Shami regarding his fitness so he can't go along with the team against the Proteans.

Suryakumar has a delicate schedule that means he may not be able to play until the start of the 2024 IPL season. Surya has a sports hernia and may undergo surgery abroad. Due to this situation, he will be sidelined for approximately two months.

As per the reports of Times of India, he might also initial matches of the IPL as it might take up to 2 months to recover from the operation.

"SKY was recently diagnosed with a sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two to three days, he will fly to Munich, Germany, to get operated for it. It means that he certainly won't be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL," a source in the BCCI was quoted as saying.
