In Short

  • Shreyas Iyer is returning as the captain of KKR for IPL 2024.
  • Nitish Rana has been appointed as the Vice-Captain of KKR.
  • Nitish Rana had led KKR when Shreyas missed IPL 2023 due to injury.

Although the news is coming that Shreyas Iyer will be a captain, some information says that Gautam Gambhir is backing Nitish Rana to continue as a captain and lead the team in a victory zone. But it is not official news; someone might have spread rumors to gain some TRP.

Gambhir as a Mentor-

Gambhir has left Lucknow Super Giants and now he will be mentoring KKR, Gautam Gambhir, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2011 to 2017, will be returning to the team as a mentor for the upcoming seasons, starting with the 2024 season. During his previous tenure with KKR, the team qualified for the IPL playoffs five times, including their title victories in 2012 and 2014, as well as reaching the final of the Champions League T20 in 2014. Gambhir's return to KKR as a mentor has been officially confirmed, and he will join the team's support staff, including head coach Chandrakant Pandit, bowling coach Bharat Arun, and assistant coach Abhishek Naya.

Shreyas Iyer -

Earlier in 2023, Iyer missed out IPL season due to his back injury and Rana stepped in as skipper throughout the season with Knight Riders finishing seventh in the table. After a gap, Iyer returned to the pitch in the 2023 Asia Cup in September-October and was one of the key players in World Cup 2023. He also made his T20I comeback in November during the series against Australia.

“It was indeed unfortunate that Shreyas missed IPL 2023 due to injury. We are delighted that he’s back and at the helm as Captain. The way he has worked hard to recover from his injury and the form he has displayed is a testament to his character," KKR's CEO Venky Mysore said as he confirmed the return of Iyer as captain.

Meanwhile, Iyer praised Rana for taking over the captaincy in 2023. “I believe the last season presented us with several challenges, including my absence due to injury. Nitish did a great job not only filling in for me but also with his commendable leadership. I am delighted that KKR has named him Vice Captain. No doubt it will strengthen the leadership group," said Iyer.
