At the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on Wednesday, Australia defeated Oman by 39 runs, starting their quest for a grand slam of major cricket trophies. Marcus Stoinis was outstanding with the bat and the ball.
At Kensington Oval, Stoinis crushed Australia to 164-5 with a game-changing 67 not out off only 36 balls. He then claimed three wickets for 19 runs, limiting Oman to 125-9 in response.
"It was a nice start," remarked player of the match Stoinis in the aftermath. "We may have hit a few roadblocks, but we're stronger now, and it's good to win.
Australia recovered from a 50-3 deficit early in the innings thanks to a brilliant batting display from Stoinis, who slammed six sixes and two fours.
Following a calm first few overs, Stoinis launched an offensive, cruising to a 102-run partnership between the fourth and fifth wickets, virtually taking the game away from the Omanis.
Warner scored 56 off 51 balls, including six fours and one six, in his last event before quitting the international game. He was out in the last over.
While Mehran bowled the 15th over of the innings, four of Stoinis' six sixes came in that over. This acceleration caused the 2021 champions to more than quadruple their batting total over the final six overs.
"Davey (Warner) and I talked about (tactics) before that over," which explains the unexpected hitting barrage. "And then you know how it is when you get the first couple balls away for boundaries, you just think you might as well try to turn it into a big over."
"Playing against a top side today was a great experience, especially following on from the Super Over last game," Ilyas stated. "Our bowlers deserve the most praise, but they did a great job." Our bowlers have exceptional skill while changing lanes."
