The fever of the IPL is on, even though the tournament is played in a 2-month window but, the tournament has been a hotly debated topic among cricket fans and pundits for the entire year. The topic heats even more when the mega auctions are around the corner with big releases or reports of prize issues, leadership, etc. Now, with the retentions for IPL 2025 done, certain calls sent shockwaves around the Indian circuit, let's have a look at the 5 players who were shockingly released by the IPL teams.
Rishabh Pant's release was the most shocking release made by the Delhi Capitals. DC though, is known for taking such calls before the auctions. The Delhi-based franchise had previously released Shreyas Iyer ahead of the 2022 mega auctions due to some undisclosed issues.
Coming to Pant, reportedly Pant was not happy with the choices the Delhi Capitals management made while hiring the new coaching setup for IPL 2025, reportedly Pant was not kept in the loop while deciding the coaches for next year. Many such reasons prompted both parties to part ways. Pant scored 446 runs in 14 games this year for DC.
One of the most unexpected exits is of Shreyas Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title this year. Iyer was expected to be the top retained player for the Kolkata Knight Riders. But, things didn't pan out as Iyer proved to be a tough negotiator and hence decided to go under the hammer.
Perhaps no one expected this release at all, Buttler has been the best batter for the Royals ever since he joined the club in 2018. Buttler, was at his peak for the Royals in 2022 when he smashed tons for fun. Buttler scored close to 800 runs in that season where the Royals reached the finals. It is still not known why Buttler was released. The Royals though still have a chance to get Buttler back via the right-to-match (RTM) card.
Siraj's name was absent in the retained list released by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 31st October. Siraj hasn't had the best of times in IPL 2024, his inability to provide wickets played a huge role in RCB remaining winless for exactly a month. With new bowlers coming up for grabs in the mega auction, could've prompted the RCB management to look beyond Siraj.
The Bangalore-based franchise though still has the option to retain Siraj via the Right-to-match card option (RTM).
Last on our list is Punjab's star bowler Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep has been the lynchpin of the bowling unit for Punjab in an otherwise weak bowling unit that has been struggling to deliver the goods. The reasons are still not known as to why Punjab haven't retained their star bowler. Just like other teams, Punjab too has the Right-To-Match card (RTM) option to get Arshdeep back.
