Sunrisers Hyderabad has recruited Sri Lankan leg spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth to replace Wanindu Hasaranga for the rest of the 2024 IPL season.
Hasaranga was allocated to play for SRH for the first time in this IPL after being bought by the 2016 champions for Rs 1.5 crore at the auction in December. However, severe soreness in his left foot eliminated his chances of playing for his new team during the current season.
Hasaranga played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru for two seasons after being purchased at a monumental price of Rs 10.75 crore during the 2022 player auction.
The leg-spinner had a great debut season for RCB, claiming 26 wickets, but he played only a few games last year before being released.
Vijayakanth is a legspinner from Sri Lanka who has only played one T20 International match. He joined SRH with a base salary of Rs 50 lakh.
Vijayakanth, 22, was part of Sri Lanka's side that competed in the Asian Games last year, where he took 1/28 from four overs. The youngster has played 33 T20s in his career, taking 42 wickets at an economy rate of 6.76.
Meanwhile, SRH has won three and lost two games in a mixed start to the season. They opened their season with a tight four-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders but followed that with a record-breaking batting performance against Mumbai.
When SRH hammered MI last month (March), they shattered the record for the highest team total in IPL history (277/3). They finished with a 31-run victory.
But in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans defeated the SRH by seven wickets. The team captained by Pat Cummins triumphed over the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings to complete a remarkable comeback.
