On Wednesday, February 28, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) revealed the senior men's team cricketers' yearly retainers for the 2023–24 cycle. Although both Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan played in India's ODI World Cup campaign last year, the national board made a significant move by removing them from the yearly retainer ship contract list.

Thirty players were included on the central contracts list, meaning that Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja were kept in the top tier (A+). Despite orders from the board and its secretary Jay Shah, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were warned to play domestic matches if they are not representing their national team but they didn't focus on that much so they were cut from their annual retainership contract. While Ishan Kishan was in Grade C, Shreyas Iyer was in Grade B of the retainers contracts for the 2022-23 season.

"Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations," the BCCI said in a statement, adding that the board has directed the players to "give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team".
