Three Indian cricketers, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Shami, have been nominated for the prestigious ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award for 2023. These players have truly proved their talent throughout the World Cup 2023 and besides this, they also had an outstanding year in terms of their performances. On the other hand, Daryl Mitchell also joined the club with the above three as he also proved his worth to the NZ team. He was the only player who had hit back-to-back 130+ runs against India in the ODI World Cup 2023.
The highlight of Shami’s exceptional bowling in the World Cup was his record haul of 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final of the tournament. He has also set a record as the most-wickets taker of the ODI World Cup 2023 (24 wickets) and that too in just 7 innings.
After a downfall, Kohli bounced back again in 2022 and never looked back. He became the "Player of the Tournament" in WC 2024 by making 765 runs and even breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar as the highest scorer in a single tournament. Besides this, he also made his 50th century and became a player with the most no. of centuries ever in the history of cricket.
Gill ended the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with 354 runs at an average of 44.25. Unfortunately, the opener couldn’t start the World Cup for India, having been down with dengue Fever, but soon returned to the pitch with a half-century against Bangladesh. He ended the tournament with 4 fifties, including an unbeaten 80, where he retired hurt midway with cramp and returned later in the final over. Besides this, he has also smashed 1584 runs at an impressive average of 63.36.
In ODIs, Mitchell scored 1204 runs in 2023, the third most in a calendar year for a New Zealand players. He also played a very consistent knock in the WC 2023 and made 552 runs in a single tournament and also ranked on 5th as the highest - runs scorer list.
