The reigning Pakistan Super League winners, Lahore Qalandars, have only won one game this season. Despite his generally strong bowling performance, Shaheen has faced criticism for several of his captaincy choices, particularly his constant upstaging of himself.

In the past 18 months, he has greatly improved as a batsman, and he was instrumental in their 2023 victory with a final-round 44 off 15 balls. But at times, batting above international greats like Sikandar Raza and David Wiese has drawn criticism; Pakistani great Wasim Akram is among his most well-known critics.
In his team's final game of the season against Quetta Gladiators, Shaheen elected to promote himself to No.5, with wickets in hand but a run rate that needed to be improved. The left-arm did his job, smashing a 34-ball 55 with four sixes for a career-best score in the format. The last of those mentioned the milestone, which Shaheen celebrated by bringing his fingers to his lips.
His knock helped his side reach 166-4 after being 69-3 in the tenth over, but it wasn't enough. Saud Shakeel batted for 88 from 65 balls, while Mohammad Wasim Jr. hit a last-ball six to secure a six-wicket victory and a playoff spot for the Quetta Gladiators.
