Some of the greatest cricket players in the world compete in the Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the largest cricket extravaganzas. Only the selected survive the tough auctions amid fierce competition, and the fortunate ones are well rewarded for their efforts. However, the franchise is now concerned as a result of certain overseas players' recent decision to withdraw from the IPL 2024, forcing them to find replacements only a few days before the competition.
Prior to the IPL 2024 season, the Lucknow Super Giants suffered a blow when they learned that their top bowler, Mark Wood, would not be participating. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to exclude the fast bowler from the forthcoming IPL season in order to manage his workload ahead of the home summer series and the T20 World Cup in June. Due to fitness concerns, Wood, whom the Lucknow franchise acquired for Rs. 7.5 crore during the IPL 2022 auction, will not play in the competition. Even though Wood had 11 wickets in four games for the Lucknow Super Giants the previous season, an elbow ailment kept him out of action for a number of games.
The English Cricket Board (ECB) has made the decision to remove talented seamer Gus Atkinson from the IPL 2024 competition in an effort to manage his workload. Even though Atkinson played his final international match during the West Indies trip in December, the ECB decided to put his physical health first. Only last year did the gifted 26-year-old Atkinson make his debut in international cricket. Atkinson was purchased by Knight Riders for Rs. 1 crore at the previous year's auction, indicating his potential as a valued asset. Atkinson will be replaced at the Kolkata Knight Riders by Dushmantha Chameera, a pacer from Sri Lanka who was not bid on at the auction. With Chameera joining the squad at a reserve price of Rs. 50 lakh, the bowling lineup will have a new dynamic.
For personal reasons, explosive top-order batsman Jason Roy has resigned from this IPL season. After a significant season with the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he played eight games and established a solid foundation for the squad with an amazing strike rate of 151.60, Roy has made his decision. Notably, Roy has been a journeyman in the Indian Premier League, having played for four different teams in as many seasons, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Lions. He has already withdrawn from the competition twice in 2020 and 2022 for personal reasons, making this his third such withdrawal. Phil Salt, another explosive English top-order hitter noted for his aggressive style of play, will take Roy's spot in the Knight Riders lineup.
Harry Brook, an England cricket player, made a very emotional declaration on his official social media accounts about his choice to not play in the next Indian Premier League. The 25-year-old said that the loss of his grandmother affected his decision to forego the Indian Premier League. He had previously given personal reasons for missing England's most recent Test trip in India.
“I lost my grandmother last month -- she was a rock to me and I spent a huge amount of my childhood in her home; my attitude to life and love for cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather. I made the decision to leave the India Test tour the night before we flew from Abu Dhabi to India because I was told for the first time that my grandmother was ill and didn't have long left”.
