On Monday at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, Deepthi Jeevanji of India won the gold medal in the women's 400-meter T20 category event, setting a new world record in the process with a timing of 55.07 seconds.
The previous world mark, which American Breanna Clark established in the Paris championships last year, was shattered by Deepthi. It was 55.12 seconds.
On the fourth day of competition, Ecuador's Lizanshela Angulo finished third with 56.68 seconds, behind Turkey's Aysel Onder in second place with 55.19 seconds.
After winning her heat race on Sunday in an Asian record pace of 56.18 seconds, Deepthi had advanced to the final.
Yogesh Kathuniya then earned a silver medal in the men's F56 discus throw, throwing 41.80 meters.
For athletes who participate in field events while sitting, there is an F56 division. In this class, athletes of all backgrounds compete, including individuals who have suffered spinal cord injuries and amputations.
