At the World Para Athletic Championships here, in the women's F51 club throw category, Ekta Bhyan of India won the gold medal with a season-best throw of 20.12 meters.
Ekta produced a strong performance to finish first, while Kashish Lakra claimed second place with a distance of 14.56 meters, continuing the remarkable run of Indian athletes a day after Deepthi Jeevanji won the gold medal in the women's 400-meter T20 category event. The medal went to Algerian Nadjet Boucherf, who scored 12.70 meters.
A bronze medalist at the Asian Para Games in China, Ekta is an officer in the Haryana Civil Services (HCS).
The 38-year-old, who started playing sports after being chosen as an HCS officer by the Haryana government, also brought home the gold medal in the club throw competition at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. Additionally, she had earned a spot for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
A terrible catastrophe in 2003 prevented Ekta from pursuing her ambition of a career in medicine. On the Delhi–Haryana border, a truck flipped over on her taxicab close to Kundli in the Sonepat area.
In the women's 400-meter T20 category event on Monday, Para Asian Games gold champion Deepthi broke the world record with a timing of 55.07 seconds.
Silver was won by T47 high jumper Nishad Kumar while bronze was earned by T35 200m runner Preethi Pal on Sunday.
