The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional T20 cricket league in India, established in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL is based on a round-robin group and knockout format, featuring ten city-based teams. The league has grown into one of the richest sports leagues in the world, with a viewership and profit potential that has made it a global phenomenon.
The IPL was conceived by Lalit Modi, the then Vice President of the BCCI, as a response to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and as a means to promote cricket in India and internationally. The first IPL season, held in 2008, was won by the Rajasthan Royals. As of 2023, the IPL has had 16 seasons, with the 2024 season scheduled to take place from March 23 to May 20, 2024.
The IPL has been instrumental in transforming cricket into a more entertaining and accessible sport, with a focus on fast-paced action, music, and celebrity involvement. The league has also led to the growth of cricket as a global sport, with other countries establishing their own domestic T20 leagues. The IPL has been a catalyst for the growth of cricketainment, a term that describes the fusion of cricket and entertainment, which has attracted new audiences to the sport.

Match Formats
T20
Format
The teams are split up into two groups of five, A and B. Every team plays once against all four of its group's opponents and twice (at home and away) against all five of the other group's teams. Every squad plays seven away games and seven at home. The top four clubs in terms of total points after the group stage advanced to the postseason. The top two teams battle against one another in a match dubbed "Qualifier 1" at this level, and the bottom two teams compete against one another in a competition dubbed "Eliminator". While the winner of Qualifier 1 was automatically eligible for the championship game, the losing team also had the opportunity to go to the finals by facing the winner of the Eliminator match, which was known as Qualifier 2. The winner of this second qualifying match advanced to the Final match. The squad that prevailed in the championship game was named the Indian Premier League victorious.

Viacom18 bagged them for an astonishing ₹23,758 crore (covering all matches across the 5 years).

IPL 2024 Auction -
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 player auction took place on December 19, 2023, in Dubai, UAE. The auction featured 333 cricketers, with 72 players being sold across various teams. The auction followed a set-wise system, categorizing players into batters, all-rounders, fast bowlers, spinners, and wicketkeepers. The top price bracket was capped at ₹2 crore, with a total of 23 players in this category.
The accelerated round, a swift and intense affair, shaped the fate of players based on the franchises' submissions. Should slots remain vacant and teams find themselves with cash left to spare, additional bidding rounds may unfold, specifically targeting unsold players.
Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in the auction, fetching ₹24.75 crore followed by Pat Cummins 20.50 crore, while other notable buys included Shardul Thakur, Harshal Patel, and Umesh Yadav. Each team can have a maximum of 25 players, with specific restrictions on the number of Indian and overseas players.
The IPL 2024 auction saw a mix of established and emerging cricketing talents, with the auction dynamics being intriguing due to the high demand-short-supply ratio of players, especially quality Indian talent.
